Inside the case

HARROWGATE, OREGON • DECEMBER 2026

THE FORD WAS HERE BEFORE THE BRIDGE.

THE WASHER WAS HERE BEFORE THE NAME.

SHE IS STILL CARRYING WHAT THE TOWN LEFT BEHIND.

Thirteen-year-old Rowan Tate has spent eight months running in her dead sister's shoes—five miles every morning, fast enough to keep grief behind her. Then she hears a woman keening beneath the county bridge and sees her washing Juni's yellow rain jacket at the old river ford.

Soon wet belongings of Harrowgate's dead appear across town. Old hospice ledgers reveal what the community once did: keep watch, wash one useful thing, speak the name, and never leave one mourner to carry all of a death.

The washer offers no bargain and predicts no new death. She only keeps working. To quiet the ford, Rowan must stop treating grief like a race and help her family recover the work Harrowgate abandoned—before every burden the living refused returns soaked in river water.

No one should carry all of a drowning.
