LAKE TAMARACK, MICHIGAN • JANUARY
THE WALLEYE ARE GONE.
THE ICE SHOWS WHAT THE TOWN WON'T FACE.
SOMETIMES THE REFLECTION ARRIVES FIRST.
Thirteen-year-old Aven Lind knows Lake Tamarack by the rules her mother taught her. Then Aven sees a second Margit standing on three feet of January ice—same face, same clothes, empty hands.
Soon doubles appear across Tamarack: a bait seller with empty tanks, a pastor before empty pews, Aven without the cap she has worn for years. Each reflection exposes the growing distance between who the town believes it is and what its changed lake can still support.
The walleye have collapsed, taking Margit's guide business with them. To protect her mother—and a town built around fish that are no longer there—Aven must keep a record honest enough to reveal the present without letting its possible futures decide who anyone becomes.
A reflection is not a prophecy. It is a measurement.
