Inside the case

JUNIPER, VIRGINIA • JANUARY

BRIN WALKED INTO THE SWAMP.

THE SEARCH FOUND NOTHING.

THEN A GREEN-GOLD LIGHT BEGAN TO MOVE.

Fourteen-year-old Kit Dunbar has searched the Great Dismal Swamp every night since Brin vanished. At 4:47, Kit straps on Brin's headlamp, walks to the one-mile marker, and comes home without her.

Then a green-gold light appears beyond the boardwalk. Local records say never follow it: wisps lead people off maintained ground, vanish beside blackwater, and leave the next step hidden. But the official search never reached the deep swamp—and the light keeps moving northeast.

Armed with a compass, an old logging spike, and rules preserved by generations of cemetery keepers, Kit must choose between a danger no one understands and leaving Brin where the search failed to look.

Meaning can wait. Ground cannot.
