THE HOUSE WAS CHEAP.
THE REPAIRS BELONG TO THEM.
SO DOES WHAT MOVES INSIDE THE WALLS.
Thirteen-year-old Nessa Volk knows how houses fail. So when her mother buys Number 14 on an abandoned steel-town row, Nessa notices the thin mortar, the crooked doors—and the footsteps climbing all fourteen stairs after midnight.
An old union ledger offers a rule: fix what is broken, maintain the thresholds, and never make the presence the answer to every problem. For generations, shared maintenance kept Mill Street livable. Then the mill closed and every family was left alone.
When a traveling Seer drives iron into Nessa's wall, the house answers with burst pipes, dead lights, and a door that will not open. To protect her little brother, Nessa must restore the practice the town abandoned before Number 14 becomes the only fact about their lives.
A difficult house should never become one family's burden.
