TORSBY, WISCONSIN • THE HAUGEN DAIRY FARM
THE PIPELINE IS CLEAN.
SOMETHING IN THE BARN HAS STOPPED HELPING.
Milk sours within minutes at the Haugen dairy farm. The pipeline is clean, the cows are healthy, and thirteen-year-old Astrid finds a cow’s tail braided in small, expert plaits at dawn.
The old Norwegian barn has its own history of work after dark. A veterinarian’s inherited wooden bowl may be a clue to the care the farm no longer remembers giving.
A working farm may depend on more than the work people can see.
